Why There is a Need for Career Development

Employees and employers need to understand the importance of career development in the workplace. Career development is the process a person learns more about his/her capabilities and skills. For an employee, career development programs will enhance their skills and make them compete in the work field.

Career development aims to define an individual’s strengths and weaknesses. This will also outline an employee’s knowledge and work experience. This process lasts for years.

Who is responsible for career development?
Employers or the institution should have the initiative to provide career development programs for their employees. But individual employees should take control of their career growth. Individuals can start building their careers by planning goals and setting timelines for promotions and salary increases.

Steps to achieve career development:
1.       Assess yourself. Identify your strong points and areas you should improve. What are your abilities, skills and interests?
2.       Identify your goals and set deadlines.
3.       Do what you can to achieve your goals.

Career development will improve your view of work and it will enhance what you already know.  Always brush up on your knowledge and skills to become a more efficient employee. This process can also be applied in other aspects of your life.
